BRIT's Planned Giving Program

Leave your own Legacy by joining the Shinners Society of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) and help protecting BRIT's future. This special group of individuals are passionate about the planet and eager to learn more about all living things. Because of their commitment to the environment they have decided to included Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) in their estate plans.

Including BRIT in your estate plan will not only assist you in reaching and achieving your own philanthropic and charitable giving goals, it will also allow BRIT to continue its mission of deepening our knowledge of the plant world and achieving public understanding of the value plants bring to life.

BRIT welcomes undesignated bequest. This allows flexibility to meet changing needs of the organization. When including BRIT in your will, we recommend that you consider using the specific bequest language.

Shinners Society Recognition

It's in our nature. Soon enough, with the right care and attention, everything is bound to grow. We see the potential that lies before us and the many directions we could take, and it's the responsibility of us all to help others grow by building and educating a community of green-thinking visionaries who will one day become the ones to instill our values to the next generation.

BRIT holds an annual event to honor those who have included BRIT in their estate plans. During this special event, we recognize these visionaries for their commitment to the next generation.

2017 Excursions

BRIT is very excited to add several short excursions for our Shinners Society members in 2017.

In April, we will board a bus and head to Stonewall, Texas for a tour and lunch at the Becker Vineyards.

During the hot summer days we will gather again to visit the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas and have lunch near the museum.

In Autumn, we will board a bus for a special tour and lunch on the grounds of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Lloyd Herbert Shinners

Lloyd H. Shinners, a member of the Southern Methodist University faculty and director of the Herbarium at SMU (now at BRIT) from 1947–1971, was "one of the strongest and most interesting workers in the entire field of systematic botany in the United States."  He championed the cause of Botany, particularly at SMU where as professor for twenty-five years and almost single-handedly developed and maintained the herbarium and systematics library.  read more
